FAQ’s

How do I use the scrap gold calculator?

Just enter your item’s weight and hit calculate. You can weigh your items with a food or postage scale. You can usually find one locally at national retailers if you don’t have one.

If you prefer a free expert appraisal to sell your gold, you can request a free Alloy Appraisal Kit. We include a detailed report including your item’s weight and a purchase offer for your items.

After you hit calculate, we will display the current price for your items, the average pawn shop offer, and Alloy’s offer.

What are the different prices displayed by the scrap gold price calculator?

When you enter your item’s weight, we calculate the value of your item with three separate amounts:

  1. Current market value: spot price refers to the current market price of gold traded for immediate delivery ( AKA on the spot) on the open market, such as the stock market. When selling gold items, receiving 100% of the spot price is not typical.
  2. Average pawn shop offer: Pawn shops can pay as little as 20% of the spot price of gold. Our calculator bases the average pawn shop price at 40% of the market value.
  3. Alloy’s minimum offer: Use our calculator to guarantee a minimum payout of 70% of the spot price on the day we receive your items. Alloy ensures at least 60% of the spot price, with most customers receiving over 80%. Ship your items for a free estimate, and we’ll match the highest offer up to 95% of the spot price—or return your items at no cost.

Our final offer is determined once your items are mailed using free shipping or dropped off at our headquarters for inspection. We calculate your offer using the spot price of gold on the day we receive your items.

Additional FAQ’s

Yes, gold is valuable in general, and so is scrap gold. While some gold buyers do not commonly buy scrap gold, Alloy buys scrap gold and guarantees to pay a minimum of 60% of the gold spot price for your scrap gold items.

The current market value, or spot price, is the price of gold traded in financial markets. We use this price to determine your offer. It’s common for precious metal buyers to pay less than 100% of the market value for items since gold is typically repurposed for other applications such as healthcare, electronics, and transportation. Therefore, there is a cost associated with processing the gold.

We calculate your offer based on a percentage of the spot price, the weight of your items, and the purity or karat of your gold. For example, 14-karat gold has 58.7% gold content; the rest is comprised of other metals.

14K gold is 58.3% pure since it’s 14 parts gold out of 24. To calculate the price, we would take the current spot price of pure gold (e.g., $60 per gram), multiply it by 58.3% to get the value of 14K gold ($34.98 per gram), then multiply that by our minimum payout which is 60% of the spot price. In this example, you would receive $20.98 per gram for 14K gold when the spot price is $60 per gram.

Remember that our average customer gets an offer higher than 80% of the spot price. If you are not fully satisfied with your offer, we can ship your precious metal items back to you free of charge.

We have a simple three-step process:

  • Request a free insured appraisal kit
  • Ship your items in to get a free no-obligation offer
  • Accept your offer and get paid!

While we do accept gold nuggets of pure 24K, we do not accept unrefined scrap gold such as panned gold, rocks with gold in them or other unrefined gold in other forms. Check out our “Items You Can Sell” page for more details.

We pay a guaranteed minimum of 60% of the gold spot price. Depending on the quantity and purity of your gold, we can offer more, and our average customer enjoys a payout of over 80% of the spot price of gold. To learn more, please see the FAQ on how we can calculate the value of your scrap gold.

Your payout is determined using the following steps:

1. Purity: The purity of gold is measured in karats (K), with 24K being pure gold. Scrap gold items are often made from alloys that contain other metals, so the purity of the gold content needs to be determined. This can be done using various testing methods, such as electronic testing, acid testing, or X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis.

2. Weight: The weight of the scrap gold item is measured in grams or troy ounces. Accurate weighing scales licensed by the State of Pennsylvania are used to determine the precise weight of the gold items, excluding any other materials or stones present in the item.

3. Market price: The current market price of gold is an essential factor in determining the value of gold items. Gold prices fluctuate daily based on supply and demand, economic factors, and global events. Evaluators stay up-to-date with the latest market trends and have pricing data refreshed every 60 seconds to provide industry leading offers.

4. Evaluation: Based on the purity, weight, and current market price of gold, evaluators calculate the value of the gold item. For example, if a gold item has a purity of 18K and weighs 10 grams, the gold content is 7.5 grams (as 18K gold contains 75% gold). The value is calculated by multiplying the weight of the gold (7.5 grams) by the current market price per gram.

At Alloy, we buy all types of gold and precious metals, including bars, coins, and jewelry made of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. If you have more questions about what types of items we can accept, you can contact us at [email protected] or text/call us at 888-672-1471 to speak with a team member directly to address any of your concerns
