Gold melt value describes the value of the purest form of gold in an item. Karat, weight, and spot price of gold determine the value of an item. It does not take craftsmanship, marketability, or quality into account.

How do I calculate the melt value of gold?

The melt value of your gold depends on several factors: weight, purity (in karats), and the current spot price of gold. These three factors work together to determine the value of your gold. The formula for calculating gold value is:

Weight x Purity x Spot Price = Value

The purity is the percentage of gold in your item. Different karats indicate various amounts of gold in an item. This table outlines those percentages and their corresponding karat.

Calculate both the weight and spot price using the same unit of measurement. We suggest grams.

Here is a formula example for a 4-gram, 14K gold ring on a day when the spot price is $107:

Weight = total weight of a ring in grams
Purity = gold content as a decimal (14K = 58.3% = 0.583)
Spot Price = current market value of 24K gold per gram ($107)

2.332g × $107
